Man winched after national park snake bite

The Toowoomba-based LifeFlight Surat Gas Aeromedical Service (SGAS) helicopter crew has winched a man to safety after he was bitten by a snake.

The rescue retrieval team was tasked to the remote national park south west of Brisbane at 4pm this afternoon (Sunday 1st Oct).

It is believed the man, aged in his 50s, was only one kilometre into his bushwalk, when the snake bit deeply into his left leg.

The terrain made it difficult for the rescue helicopter pilot to land, so he carefully maneuvered the aircraft and winched in the LifeFlight Critical Care Paramedic.

The LifeFlight Critical Care Paramedic worked alongside a Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedic to treat the patient who was showing snake bite symptoms.

The pilot hovered the helicopter above the patient and the LifeFlight Air Crew Officer winced the patient and Critical Care Paramedic into the aircraft.

The patient was in a stable condition during the fight to Toowoomba Hospital for further treatment.

Tasked by Queensland Health, the LifeFlight SGAS helicopter and crew performed this mission as part of the SGAS partners’ commitment to providing community aeromedical coverage.

He was in a serious but stable condition.
