LifeFlight winches man after yacht runs aground

The Bundaberg-based LifeFlight aeromedical crew this morning airlifted an injured man to hospital after his yacht ran aground off Lady Elliot Island.

The LifeFlight helicopter was tasked at 5.30am by Retrieval Services Queensland to the damaged yacht 500m off the island.

It is believed the yacht ran aground at about 2am this morning and the owner radioed the island resort, which sent staff via kayaks to deliver first aid to the man.

A LifeFlight rescue crew officer was winched into the waist-high water and he worked with the resort staff to carry the patient off the yacht and into an air rescue vest, before they were both winched back into the helicopter.

The critical care LifeFlight doctor and Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) flight paramedic treated the man in his 60s for chest injuries.

He was airlifted to the Bundaberg LifeFlight base and road transported by QAS to Bundaberg Hospital.
