LifeFlight rescues lone sailor after yacht runs aground

The Bundaberg-based LifeFlight aeromedical crew Friday night rescued a sailor after his yacht ran aground near Sandy Cape on the northern tip of K’gari.

The LifeFlight helicopter was tasked by Queensland Police Service (QPS) and Retrieval Services Queensland at midnight.

The skipper had sent a distress call, picked up by Marine Rescue Queensland who had notified QPS with his location.

The rescue crew quickly located the 16m vessel beached after it was washed onto rocks by waves.

The pilot was able to land the chopper on the beach and the skipper, aged in his 50s, was located safe and ashore nearby.

Following medical assessment, the aeromedical crew confirmed the skipper was uninjured and was flown to the LifeFlight base, before being road transported by the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) to the Bundaberg Hospital for observation.

The Bundaberg-based LifeFlight helicopter and crew service the Wide Bay-Burnett region and beyond.
