Applying safe work practices around aircraft

Learn how to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement control measures. This Course combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on practical training and is essential for personnel in public safety, aviation, and other roles that require ground support around aircraft.

Successful completion of this course will result in the issue of a Statement of Attainment in PUAFIR017 Work safely around aircraft.

This course covers:

  • Hazard and risk management: Identify hazards, assess risks, and implement control measures to ensure a safe working environment around aircraft.
  • Legislative and WHS requirements: Understand and comply with Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation and Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) regulations.
  • Aircraft and operational procedures: Learn safe procedures for approaching, operating near, and working with aircraft, including the importance of visual contact with pilots or aircrew.

Applicable for anyone working in roles where interaction with aircraft is a regular part of their duties, including:

  • Ground support personnel including aircraft refuellers, baggage handlers, and aircraft marshallers
  • Operational staff in fire, land management, and emergency services
  • Individuals involved in aviation-related activities requiring safety protocols near aircraft

The Work Safely Around Aircraft course includes both a practical and a theoretical assessment.

The practical component is assessed through observation of your performance whilst operating around aircraft and providing safe ground support.

The theoretical component is assessed via a written exam at the end of the course.

Once you’ve been deemed competent in your overall performance, you’ll receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment in PUAFIR017 Work safely around aircraft.

It allows students to link to a secure online record of all qualifications gained regardless of the provider. This system was implemented by the Australian Government in 2015, so it will show student achievements from 1 January 2015 onwards. As an RTO, The LifeFlight Training Academy cannot issue Statements of Attainment without a USI. Therefore, it is mandatory that all students supply their USI upon enrolment.

If a student does not have a USI, they can visit https://www.usi.gov.au/students/get-a-usi for more information, and instructions on how to apply.

Invoices are currently organised once enrolments have been received and your placement is confirmed on a course.
