Seriously injured driver airlifted after crashing into tree

RACQ LifeFlight Rescue has flown a man to hospital, after his van ran off the road and crashed into a tree early this morning.

The Sunshine Coast RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter was tasked to the scene in the Gympie region at 6:26am. (Wed 26th)

The pilot managed to land on the road, which was closed by emergency services.

The RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Critical Care doctor and Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) flight paramedic assisted local ambulance officers, who were already at the scene.

The man, who is aged in his sixties, was initially trapped inside the vehicle and suffered serious injuries to his leg and chest.

He was flown to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The man was the driver and only occupant of the van.
