The Farm Accident
Clive Weier worked his Mondure property for decades without serious incident. However, a split-second accident with an industrial grain auger changed everything. When the auger jammed, Clive believed it had been turned off. He reached in to wipe away some grain, but the machine suddenly restarted and amputated his hand.
Lifesaving First Aid
Clive’s son and neighbour reacted quickly to stop the severe bleeding. They tightly gripped his upper arm and quickly applied a tourniquet. While their quick thinking saved his life, a traumatic amputation requires urgent hospital surgery to prevent fatal blood loss.
Critical Care in the Paddock
LifeFlight’s Toowoomba-based rescue helicopter was in the air within minutes. The crew rapidly shrank the vast distance between a remote farm and a major hospital. Standing in the dirt paddock as the sun set, the LifeFlight critical care doctor and paramedic administered advanced pain relief and safely intubated Clive.
