Trust, teamwork and training: How LifeFlight’s Roma team saved Donna

Patient: Donna Neil (Rockhampton mother-of-two and experienced bushwalker)

Mission: Remote mountain rescue after a serious fall in Carnarvon Gorge

LifeFlight Rescue: Complex overnight planning culminating in a challenging sunrise winch extraction

Key Capabilities: Aeromedical teamwork, remote area rescue expertise and advanced winch operations

The Carnarvon Gorge Hiking Accident

What began as a training hike through Queensland’s rugged Carnarvon Gorge became a life-threatening ordeal for experienced bushwalker Donna Neil.

All alone and a long way from the help she needed

While preparing for the iconic 230-kilometre Larapinta Trail, Donna was walking alone on the remote Great Walk when she lost her footing on a steep mountainside and fell approximately 15 metres. Injured, stranded and unable to move safely, she used a satellite communicator to contact emergency services and await rescue.

A complex winch rescue relying on a well-trained team

The mission quickly evolved into one of the region’s most complex rescue operations. An off-duty LifeFlight aircrew officer trekked through the night to reach Donna, provide support and monitor her condition, while his Roma-based LifeFlight aeromedical crew planned a challenging helicopter winch extraction at first light.

Operating in steep terrain surrounded by dense timber and narrow ridgelines, the crew relied on years of specialist training, precision flying and seamless teamwork to safely extract their patient.

“We train for this sort of operation regularly. You’re not just training individual skills, you’re training to operate as a crew, each doing their own job and trusting others to do theirs, working together to get somebody safely out of a very difficult situation. By the time you arrive at a job like Carnarvon Gorge, everybody knows their role.” LifeFlight pilot Pete Marris

Their coordinated effort helped bring Donna home to her family and highlighted the trust, teamwork and training that underpin every LifeFlight rescue mission.

“When I heard the chopper, it was an overwhelming feeling of absolute relief.” LifeFlight patient, Donna Neil.
