The Sunshine Coast-based LifeFlight helicopter crew has winched a man to safety, after he was injured while hiking a popular mountain in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.
It’s believed the hiker had been walking along the northern track when he lost his footing and fell several metres.
He suffered a dislocated shoulder as a result of the fall.
The rescue chopper was called into action yesterday at approximately 4:45pm (Saturday, 25th of March).
The chopper pilot was able to zero in on the man’s location with the help of specialist Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) personnel, who were already in attendance.
Due to the difficult terrain, it was decided it was safest to winch the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Flight Paramedic on board the helicopter, along with a stretcher, down to the patient.
The man, who is aged in his 20s, was treated for his injuries, before being secured into the stretcher and hoisted up into rescue chopper, along with the QAS Flight Paramedic.
He was flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition, under the supervision of the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Critical Care Doctor.
The Sunshine Coast LifeFlight helicopter crew had already completed another mission from the same mountain earlier that day.
The mission was performed in the LifeFlight Special Mission helicopter. The aircraft is part of LifeFlight Australia’s commercial operation, which supports the work of the community helicopter fleet, through our profit-for-purpose model and is rotated through our community bases from time to time, when operationally required.
In 2022, RACQ LifeFlight Rescue’s community helicopters, Air Ambulance jets, Critical Care Doctors, Flight Nurses and Flight Paramedics came to the aid of 6,978 people.
