Girls show heart with record donation to rescue choppers

LifeFlight has been presented with the largest donation, from a single charity event, in the service’s history.

“We are so grateful, for such a small group of girls, to raise such a massive amount of money,” said RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Fundraising Coordinator, Amy Luhrs.

The 2019 Girls Got Heart ‘Ride with Heart’ charity bike ride, from Brisbane to Meandarra, raised a record-breaking $80,000 for RACQ LifeFlight Rescue’s fleet of choppers.

“Girls Got Heart is all about raising money for rural health and helping in any way we can,” said Girls Got Heart Founder, Rebecca East.

“LifeFlight is vital to rural communities, honestly, they can’t live without it.”

Thirty-three riders pedalled 750km through south west Queensland, all in the name of helping to keep the rescue rotors turning.

“Six lives will be saved from $80,000,” Ms Luhrs said.

“How fantastic is that!”

Communities in Toowoomba, Dalby, Condamine, Roma and Meandarra warmly welcomed the group throughout the five day ride, in August.

“The most rewarding part is going into those communities and immersing ourselves in the spirit of the beautiful people out there,” Mrs East said.

Along the way, participants were introduced to RACQ LifeFlight Rescue crews and past patients, cementing their passion and determination to complete the ride and raise money.

“It was so powerful,” Ms East said.

“They bring you to tears, they’re so grateful to have the choppers.”

The donation will help keep RACQ LifeFlight Rescue’s community helicopters, operated out of Toowoomba, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Bundaberg ready to take flight at a moment’s notice.

The Girls Got Heart ‘Ride with Heart’ will be a biennial event, with the next ride taking place in 2021.
