LifeFlight SGAS crew winches injured hiker to safety

The Roma-based LifeFlight Surat Gas Aeromedical Service (SGAS) helicopter crew have winched an injured hiker to safety, after she fell while bushwalking, north-west of Roma.

The rescue aircraft was called into action around 1.30pm this afternoon.

As there was no mobile phone reception where the accident happened, another hiker walked about four kilometres back to a carpark, to call for help.

The pilot then flew to the location which had been described over the phone and the crew spotted a group of people waving at them.

A LifeFlight paramedic was winched down to the woman, who is aged in her 60s.

The pilot landed the helicopter in a clearing nearby, while the paramedic assessed the woman’s injuries and prepared her for the airlift.

The crew then returned to the scene and winched the patient and paramedic up to the safety of the aircraft.

The woman was flown to the Roma LifeFlight base, from where she was transported to Roma Hospital via road, by Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS).

The patient was in a stable condition, with lower leg injuries.

The LifeFlight SGAS helicopter performed the mission, as part of the SGAS partners’ commitment to assisting in providing the south west region and beyond, with community aeromedical coverage, by donating 150 flying hours each year.
