LifeFlight airlifts four people after boat sinks off Bundaberg

The Bundaberg-based LifeFlight aeromedical crew airlifted four people today off an island near the coast of Bundaberg in a multi-agency response.

Three adults and one teenager had been out fishing Saturday when they took shelter from the weather on Hoskyn Island. During the night they discovered the boat was taking on water and activated their emergency position-indicating radiobeacon (EPIRB).

Retrieval Services Queensland tasked the Bundaberg LifeFlight chopper Sunday morning at 4:30am to locate and assess the four people.

The chopper landed on the beach after locating the vessel and the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedic and LifeFlight rescue crewman assessed three adults and one teenager.

The group did not require medical treatment.

Due to the location both the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) vessels could not reach the island due to the reef surrounding it.

The rescue chopper ferried all four people across to Lady Musgrave Island where they were transferred to the mainland by boat.

The Bundaberg-based LifeFlight helicopter and crew service the Wide Bay-Burnett region and beyond.
