The High-Speed Crash
Elite triathlete Alexa Leary was used to pushing her body to the absolute limit. However, a horrific, high-speed cycling accident during a training ride became her toughest race yet. The violent crash left Alexa with life-threatening injuries, including a server Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). She needed urgent, highly specialised surgery to survive.

A quick-thinking bystander immediately put Alexa into the recovery position to keep her airway clear. They stayed by her side and reassured her help was on the way. Because brain injuries require immediate expert care, every minute mattered.

Advanced Neurological Stabilisation
LifeFlight’s Sunshine Coast Crew arrived quickly to take over her care. The critical care doctor and flight paramedic worked together to keep her stable during the flight. They created a protective intensive care environment inside the helicopter. This elite level of care during the flight ensures Alexa never left a hospital environment.
A Second Chance at Life
The crew flew Alexa directly to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. The incredible speed of the chopper and the absolute professionalism of the team saved her life. This vital rescue gave Alexa what she calls her “second life,” allowing her to recover and later inspire the nation in the swimming pool.
