The Crash

A sudden change in weather turned a routine paraglide into a fight for survival for Maverick Robbins. He had only seconds to brace for the high-speed impact into the hard sandstone cliff face at Rainbow Beach. He clung onto a scrappy saltbush, with his legs dangled over a crumbling, sandy ledge with a dangerous 20-metre drop below.

The Emergency Call

Maverick dialed Triple Zero (000). He told the operator that only a helicopter could get him out of this terrifying situation. As the sun set, the Sunshine Coast LifeFlight crew took off into the dark.

Elite Pilot and Aircrew Skill

The rescue pilot fought fierce winds and recirculating sand that blocked his vision. He used precision flying skills to hold the chopper steady above the cliff – at twice the height of a normal winch. A LifeFlight critical care doctor and rescue crewman winched down into the dark. They walked across a sandy slope to reach Maverick.

The only way I could describe LifeFlight that day, is that they were real life superheroes.” LifeFlight Patient Maverick Robbins

Advanced Aeromedical Training

The success of this complex winch mission was backed by years of rigorous aeromedical training. The team calmly stabilised Maverick’s severe spinal and ankle injuries on the narrow ledge. Working with Queensland Fire and Rescue Officers, they safely hoisted him up and over the ledge. He was winched into the cabin. The team’s speed and advanced medical skills saved his life.

The rescue was amazing. It was such a brilliant job done by the team. It took a lot of experience and knowledge and years of training to be able to do that safely. What was really a high-risk scenario, turned into something that was cool, calm, and controlled.”  LifeFlight Critical Care Doctor Carly Silvester
