Yuletide yacht parade to benefit CareFlight

More than 45 boats, adorned with lights and Christmas decorations will sail the canals, spreading Christmas cheer while raising funds for a great cause.

CareFlight’s Relationship Manager, Angela Miles, says 100% of the proceeds will be donated to RACQ CareFlight Rescue – the Sunshine Coast’s local helicopter rescue service.

“This annual event, organised by the Mooloolaba Yacht Club, is a great night out for the whole family and a bit different to your usual Christmas events,” she said.

“The convoy attracts an array of yachts, power boats, outriggers, party boats and catamarans.

“The participants go all out, covering their boats in lights, tinsel, inflatable Santa’s, giant baubles – you name it.”

Spectators can see the merry maritime display from three main vantage points including La Balsa Park at Buddina, Charles Clarke Reserve and The Wharf Mooloolaba. The boats will work their way anti-clockwise from The Wharf to the end of Mooloolah Island, down the main Kawana canal to Lawries Marina, along past La Balsa Park then back to The Wharf for judging.

“There are lots of other smaller parks dotted around the canals which will make for great viewing locations,” Ms Miles said.

“CareFlight volunteers will be there on the night selling raffle tickets with all proceeds going to CareFlight.

“Last year the raffle raised $2,500 to help keep the Sunshine Coast rescue helicopter flying in the community. We are so grateful to the public and local businesses like Mooloolaba Yacht Club for supporting our charitable service.”

CareFlight’s Bear Mascot ‘Chief’ will also be there to meet families and spread some Christmas cheer.

“We encourage families to bring a picnic and line the canals to watch the show. But please keep an eye out for our volunteers and our mascot ‘Chief’ shaking the donation tins,” she said.

Prizes will be awarded for best dressed boat and best decorated canal-front home as well as a colour in competition for the kids.

The event runs from 6:30pm – 8:30pm.
