- About different types of EBS and their characteristics
- How to deal with malfunctions
- EBS clearing operations
- How to conduct before flight and after flight checks and procedures
- How to safely breathe compressed air
- How to use an EBS in an inverted position to safely exit a submerged helicopter
The course trains you to cope with a variety of ditching situations including:
- Upright submersion
- Underwater inversion

LifeFlight Training Academy RTO 2762
Our generic underwater escape training simulators have been specifically designed and certified to instruct you on how to escape a submerged aircraft using a range of different exits.
They carry up to six students in a replica cockpit and rear area and feature sliding doors, push out windows and doors with a jettison facility, to recreate the conditions you would encounter in the field.
If you are unable to swim or have a fear of water or confined spaces, please advise us so we can tailor the course accordingly.
The course includes both a practical and theoretical component.
The practical component will be assessed through observation of your performance in the simulator, where you’ll use Emergency Breathing Systems in a variety of escape situations. These include 180-degree rollover, 180-degree rollover in blackout conditions and 180-degree rollover using a secondary exit.
The theoretical component will be assessed using a written questionnaire at the end of the course.
Once you’ve passed both components, you’ll receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment. Statements of Attainment will be issued within 30 days of achieving competency.
The written assessment will be provided prior to the commencement of the course. This will be marked by an assessor before organising attendance for the practical component of the assessment. If the student is not successful in completing the knowledge component of the course they will be advised to attend the full course. The RPL component of this course can only be offered if you have attended a LifeFlight HUET theory component within the last two years. This policy is due to the currency issues created by the lack of being able to utilise the skills and knowledge contained in this course on a regular basis.
Very well organised and presented course by LifeFlight. Phil Head and Jerome Guitton were brilliant instructors and were experts in their field. Thank you Phil for all the extra work and time you put in to assist me in completing my ATPL. LifeFlight Training Academy has friendly, helpful and dedicated people and that is what makes the difference between a good and excellent training organisation.
