Teenage girl flown to hospital after horse fall

The teenager, who was visiting the area and is veterinary science student, was riding the horse in an enclosure on the property when the accident happened.

The SGAS crew flew the short 10-minute flight to the station with a LifeFlight Critical Care Doctor on board.

LifeFlight doctor Ian Humble said the teenager was riding the horse around 4pm when she was thrown from the horse, which then fell on top of her. Dr Humble said she suffered a head wound and other soft tissue injuries as a result of the accident.

The teenager was initially treated by the local Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedic before the SGAS LifeFlight helicopter arrived on the scene. The LifeFlight crew spent around half an hour on the scene treating the patient.

The young lady was then airlifted to Roma Hospital in a stable condition.

The SGAS helicopters – based in Roma and Toowoomba – provide up to 150 funded hours for community retrievals each year.
Since 2011, Queensland gas companies Arrow Energy, Origin Energy, QGC and Santos have partnered with LifeFlight to provide the service for gas-industry workers and community members living in the state’s South-West.
In 2016-17, the SGAS choppers flew 101 missions, including community missions.
