Second stinger airlift within hours for RACQ LifeFlight Rescue

He was swimming with three other people at Wathumba Creek, a notorious Irukandji hotspot on the western side of the island, when he was stung across the neck by an unknown species of marine stinger.

The RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter landed on a small spit of land next to the creek, where the man was assessed and treated by the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) flight paramedic, before being airlifted to the Bundaberg Hospital this evening for further medical attention.

The patient, aged in his mid-twenties, was on his first day of a boating and camping holiday, when the incident happened just before 6pm.

The RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter had returned to base less than two hours earlier, after flying another Fraser Island beachgoer to Hervey Bay Hospital.

That patient, also aged in his twenties, was stung on the foot by what was believed to be an Irukandji jellyfish, while swimming on the eastern side of the island.

The Bundaberg RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter has airlifted eight marine stinger patients from Fraser Island in the past two weeks.
