Robbie McEwen officially launches the 2014 CareFlight Base to Base Cycle Challenge with $10,000 auction

Mr McEwen auctioned off a signed and framed Orica GreenEDGE 2013 Tour de France team jersey, which went to an anonymous bidder for $10,000, to help give back to the community rescue service.

The CareFlight Base to Base Cycle Challenge will be held on Sunday May 4 with a team of 50 elite cyclists riding an impressive 270 kilometres in a single day from the Gold Coast to CareFlight’s Toowoomba Hangar.

Forty guests attended the official launch event including dedicated CareFlight supporters, Base to Base Cycle Challenge sponsors, and cyclists Luke Lucas, Alex Wohler, Byron and Josh Smith, Brendan Dobbin, Andrew Hacker, Brad Donald and Kerry Stubbs.

The event was staged in an operational CareFlight Hangar on the Gold Coast with a networking breakfast hosted by RACQ CareFlight’s Executive Fundraising Manager Leanne Angel.

“Robbie has been a strong supporter of RACQ CareFlight Rescue’s helicopter service and we’re privileged he is returning for a second year to tackle the gruelling 270-kilometre trek,” Ms Angel said.

Mr McEwen will hit the road with a number of well-known cyclists, former patients, corporate executives and CareFlight crew including CEO of the Gold Coast Suns Travis Auld and CareFlight Paramedic Brad Solomon.

“We’re so thankful that 25 riders have already signed on to this event to raise much-needed funds and awareness for RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopters.

“With each rescue mission costing more than $12,500, we rely on the community for more than a third of our funding. Fundraising events like this are vital to keep our rescue helicopters in the air, so CareFlight can continue to save lives every day across Queensland.

This year’s event is expected to be the biggest to-date with a goal to raise $100,000.

The Gold Coast is one of four RACQ CareFlight Rescue bases servicing Queensland.
