A yachtsman has been towed to safety after his 32 foot vessel was dismasted while trying to cross the Wide Bay Bar this afternoon.
The Sunshine Coast RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter was tasked at 2.30 this afternoon.
It joined a fixed wing aircraft and the Tin Can Bay Coast Guard in the search for the vessel after the captain alerted a friend that he was in trouble, and discharged a distress beacon.
The yachtsman was located similtaneously by the Coast Guard and the RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter drifting off the coast dismasted, with both his engines and radio unserviceable.
He was towed to harbour by the Coast Guard and was uninjured.
RACQ CareFlight crew has praised his quick thinking and preparedness.
The discharge of the EPIRB helped authorities quickly hone in on his location.
