In 2014, LifeFlight acquired the first two of its three AgustaWestland AW139 helicopters.
It’s the first time in the service’s history that new rather than repurposed aircraft have been purchased, made possible by government funding and ongoing community support.
The AW139 is the market-leading twin-engine helicopter.
Setting benchmarks for safety design features, the aircraft’s performance capabilities are tailor-made for the demanding aero-medical environment.
The faster AW139 features a state-of-the-art cockpit and avionics system, and a much larger working space for the medical crew in the rear of the aircraft.
The helicopter can comfortably transfer two stretchered patients and two seated passengers, in addition to the four-person crew.
LifeFlight’s first AW139 helicopter began operating out of the Brisbane Airport Base in September 2015; a third aircraft is scheduled to come into service before the end of 2016.
