LifeFlight offers three targeted courses to qualify and prepare you for this dynamic and challenging career.

Introductory Crewman Course

Through theoretical and practical training you’ll learn:

  • About pre and post flight preparation – the importance of preparation, briefing procedures and safe boarding techniques.
  • How to identify and use essential Personal Protective Equipment and Safety Equipment.
  • How to conduct Emergency Procedures and Drills – dealing with equipment failure, directing passengers, working with pilots and crew, brace positions and personal response control.
  • How to escape a submerged aircraft and survive at sea.
  • How to use lifesaving equipment including life jackets and life rafts.
  • How to carry out aviation and helicopter security procedures.
  • How to land in prepared and improvised sites and carry out winching and wireman activities.
Credit towards Cert III in Aviation

Completing the Crewman course will give you 9 of the 14 competencies needed for a Certificate III in Aviation – Rescue Crewman (AVI30510).  If you wish to obtain your Certificate III qualification, we can provide you with additional training to do so. We also offer a Certificate IV in Aviation to further develop your skills and further enhance your career prospects.

AVIF2014 Undertake aircraft underwater escape and survival 
(HUET) 
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to exit an aircraft during underwater escape situations, including making appropriate survival decisions and working with others.

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to apply aircraft safety procedures, it includes preparing for airside operations, operating around aircraft and implementing aviation safety emergency procedures. 
AVIW3025 Complete aircraft and flight equipment pre and post flight actions  This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to prepare aircraft and specialist equipment for a flight, and to perform and certify flight-servicing inspections including pre- and post-flight requirements. 
TLIO1002 Follow security procedures when working with passengers and personnel  This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to follow security procedures when working with passengers and personnel within the transport and logistics industry. It includes checking and maintaining the security of passengers, workplace personnel and visitors; identifying and responding to security threats or situations; and completing all required security records. 
AVIW3024 Perform wireman duties  This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to perform wireman duties, in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and national operating standards. It includes preparing for recovery or deployment and recovering/deploying equipment and personnel.

It includes preparing for airside operations, operating around aircraft and implementing aviation safety emergency procedures.

This  unit  involves  the  skills  and  knowledge  required  to  employ  fatigue  risk management practices in an  aviation workplace, in  compliance with relevant regulatory requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and national operating standards. It includes recognising signs of personal fatigue, employing fatigue risk management practices to minimise fatigue, and identifying fatigue in others.

AVIF3006 Respond to abnormal and emergency situations within the aircraft  This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to respond to abnormal and emergency situations on a commercial aircraft flight, including responding to a medical emergency during a flight, to adverse weather and/or flying conditions and to various forms of aircraft emergency. It also covers the skills and knowledge required to respond to fire on board the aircraft, assist in or direct the evacuation of the aircraft, and complete all necessary documentation following an emergency or abnormal incident. 
AVIW3024 Perform wireman duties  This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to carry out wireman duties from a rotary wing aircraft and  includes personnel and  equipment transfers, rescue net operations, stretcher lifts, double harness lifts and hi-line transfers. 
AVIW3025 Complete aircraft and flight equipment pre and post flight actions  This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to prepare aircraft and specialist equipment for a flight, and to perform and certify flight-servicing inspections including pre- and post-flight requirements. 
AVIZ1005 Maintain basic situation awareness in an aviation workplace This unit involves the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to manage basic situation awareness in aviation workplaces, including being aware of and assessing situations, making appropriate decisions, setting appropriate work priorities, carrying out workplace tasks, and communicating/working with others in accordance with workplace procedures and relevant regulatory requirements.

In this course you’ll learn:

  • About pre and post flight preparation – the importance of preparation, briefing procedures and safe boarding techniques.
  • How to identify and use essential Personal Protective Equipment and Safety Equipment.
  • How to conduct Emergency Procedures and Drills – dealing with equipment failure, directing passengers, working with pilots and crew, brace positions and personal response control.

It includes preparing for airside operations, operating around aircraft and implementing aviation safety emergency procedures. 

AVIF0004 Implement aviation risk management processes 

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to implement aviation risk management processes, in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and national operating standards. It includes identifying, controlling, monitoring and reviewing the effectiveness of risk management processes as part of a safety management system (SMS). Work involves managing the effects of uncertainty on objectives using an SMS within a variety of operational contexts within the Australian aviation industry. 

AVIF0014 Manage human factors in aviation operations 

This unit involves the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to manage human factors in aircraft flight including monitoring own performance, recognising errors and managing corrective action, and managing own physiological and psychological condition.

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to manage disruptive behaviour and unlawful interference with aviation, in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and national operating standards. It includes monitoring passenger behaviour, identifying and resolving disruptive or unlawful interference, taking action to manage unlawful interference, and reporting and documenting unlawful interference with aviation. 

AVIW3025 Complete aircraft and flight equipment pre and post flight actions 

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to prepare aircraft and specialist equipment for a flight, and to perform and certify flight-servicing inspections including pre- and post-flight requirements.

BSBMGT401 Show leadership in the workplace 

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work with teams and individuals, their standard of conduct and the initiative they take in influencing others. At this level, work will normally be carried out within routine and non-routine methods and procedures which require the exercise of some discretion and judgment. 

TLIA1001 Secure Cargo 

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to secure cargo including preparing to secure cargo/containers, lashing and unlashing cargo, protecting cargo from weather, and packing and unpacking cargo. 

TLID2003 Handle dangerous goods/hazardous substances 

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to handle dangerous goods and hazardous substances in accordance with relevant work health safety 
(WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations concerning the safe handling of dangerous goods and hazardous substances, within the transport and logistics industry.  It includes identifying requirements for working with dangerous goods and/or hazardous substances, confirming site incident procedures and selecting handling techniques 

TLIE3002 Estimate/calculate mass, area and quantify dimensions 

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to estimate and calculate mass and area and quantify dimensions of loads as part of work functions in the transport, stevedoring, warehousing, and/or storage sectors. This includes estimating loads to be transported or placed in storage, identifying mass, area and volume limitations of available transport/storage systems and carrying out calculations required to organise load(s) to match identified transport/storage limitations.
