Rescue chopper called to end of school celebration

The local RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter landed on a northern Sunshine Coast beach this afternoon, to airlift a teenage boy who was reportedly caught in a rip and almost drowned.

He was on a camping trip, celebrating the end of the school year with friends, when the incident occurred.

The teen swallowed a large amount of water, but made it back to shore by himself, before raising the alarm.

The RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter landed on the beach just after 12.30pm.

The aeromedical crew was met by the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) officers who had treated the boy at the scene.

He was in a stable condition when he was flown to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.
