CareFlight assists with safe recovery of vessel in distress
RACQ CareFlight Rescue assisted in a search and rescue mission to successfully locate and retrieve a vessel in distress in the Great Sandy Straits, South of Hervey Bay overnight.
A half cabin runabout with around five people on board reportedly placed a distress call via radio when it began taking on water.
A local Volunteer Marine Rescue boat quickly responded and the Sunshine Coast-based RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter was called in at around 10.15pm to assist with locating the vessel in the River Heads region.
CareFlight Pilot Brent Hall was able to utilise Night Vision Googles (NVG) on board the community rescue helicopter to search the area.
Once the vessel was located, the Volunteer Marine Rescue service towed to the boat and its passengers to River Heads Boat Ramp; the CareFlight helicopter maintained an overhead watch until the vessel was safety retrieved.
