Mountain biker breaks back in downhill dive

The RACQ CareFlight rescue helicopter was tasked half way down the Toowoomba Range late Sunday afternoon to airlift a 23 year old male with multiple injuries after a mountain bike accident.

Due to the terrain of the incident our flight paramedic was winched 120ft down to the scene.

The rider had been participating in a mountain bike race when he rode over a jump and the front of the bike on landing came up and hit him in the throat and chest. He suffered serious back, throat, chest and head injuries as well as he was treated for a suspected spinal injury.

The patient was winched back into the aircraft and airlifted to Toowoomba Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
