CareFlight chopper performs sea rescue off bulk carrier
The RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter has flown to the aid of a man in his 30s seriously injured on a bulk carrier, 76 nautical miles off the coast of Bundaberg.
The Bundaberg-based rescue team was tasked to the vessel - named New Aspiration - by Australian Search and Rescue (AusSAR) to treat and transport a man with a serious compound fracture to his right leg.
The man sustained the injury in the ship’s engine room when it’s believed a large steel plate hit his ankle, fracturing and partially severing the leg.
Four work mates carried the injured man from the engine room up onto the ship’s deck where the CareFlight chopper landed just after 4pm local time. The man was treated on-scene for around an hour by CareFlight’s intensive care paramedic before being flown to Bundaberg Base Hospital for further treatment.
He travelled in a stable condition.
