Do you know how to treat a snake bite?
RACQ LifeFlight Rescue crews respond to many patients suffering from snake bites, particularly in Summer and Autumn of each year.
LifeFlight's Chief Medical Officer 'Dr Al' says some simple steps can significantly increase your chances of survival.
If you suspect you have been bitten by a snake, it's important to:
- Remain calm and limit body movement to prevent the venom spreading
- Call triple zero (000) immediately
- Apply a bandage to the bite, wrapping it tightly around the area to compress it
- Don’t try to kill or capture the snake as people can find they are bitten a second time. Contrary to urban myth, medical facilities don’t need the snake for identification
