At around 4am this morning, the RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter was involved in the aerial search for two people missing from a vessel 20 miles off the coast of Ballina.
The two fishermen were reported missing on Friday evening (20 December) at around 5pm. They were expected to dock in Ballina by 5pm but the vessel never arrived.
At first light, the Gold Coast-based RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter joined the search for the 18 foot half cabin vessel. The Westpac helicopter was also on scene.
The aerial search teams located the missing vessel and the Westpac helicopter winched the two passengers to safety, flying them to Ballina Hospital for treatment.
The RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter returned to base.
