The man was driving downhill around a particularly steep turn when he crossed over to the opposite side of the road and collided with the oncoming vehicle.
The passengers on board the 4WD – a mother and her four children – are in shock but unharmed.
The 4WD driver was the first to assist the injured man and is believed to have made the call to Queensland Ambulance Service, who arrived on the scene shortly after.
Toowoomba based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter was tasked to airlift the patient at 1:19pm.
The patient was transported in a stable condition to Toowoomba Base Hospital.
