During the hands-on workshop held at Ken Mills’ Maroochydore service centre, participants learnt motoring basics like how to change a tyre, and how to maintain their car properly and keep themselves safe by recognising dangerous wear and tear.
Ken Mills Toyota Director Principal Brett Mills said learning about road safety is especially important for young drivers.
“As a car dealership, I believe we have a role to play in providing educational opportunities for local drivers – be it opening up our 4WD track for people to practice on or hosting events such as this,” he said.
LifeFlight Paramedic Brad Solomon gave a powerful talk on the night, providing a first-hand account of what it’s like to be first on the scene at a crash. The LifeFlight team also produced a helpful ‘First on Traffic Scene Glovebox Resource Kit’, including a safety checklist for a motor vehicle crash scene, and simple tips for assisting a patient.
Officers from the Queensland Police Service took drivers through drug testing, and what it’s like to be breathalysed.
Ethan, a learner driver from St John’s College in Nambour, said the information was invaluable.
“I’m about to go to my P’s and I feel much more prepared to be driving out on the road after the information night Ken Mills Toyota put on,” he said.
Parent Maureen Ingle was also impressed by the workshop.
“We will definitely be coming back end of 2018 when our next child gets their P’s so please keep us on your books for then,” she said.
Last year, RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter crews airlifted 223 patients involved in motor vehicle accidents throughout Queensland. As community partners for the past three years, Ken Mills and LifeFlight wanted to create the program to educate young drivers, and encourage positive driver behaviour.
“We were able to offer something truly unique to these young drivers. It was a pleasure to host the event, and one that we will certainly be continuing,” Mr Mills said.
A date for the next workshop is yet to be confirmed, so keep an eye on LifeFlight’s Facebook page for more details.
