Former MP trapped in grain silo for more than seven hours

The former National Country Party politician, Ian Cameron became trapped up to his chest in grain around 2pm on 2 August after an iron part of the silo collapsed, causing him to fall and sink further into the grain.

The Toowoomba RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter was tasked to the Leichhardt Highway property to assist with the rescue, departing the Clive Berghofer CareFlight Centre shortly after 4.30pm.

Attempts were made to hoist the man out of the silo by securing a rope underneath his arms, however the man experienced pain around his feet when crews tried to move him.

It was decided the safest way to extract the man would be digging out the grain around him.

After three hours of manpower, additional rescue crews brought in a vacuum and Mr Cameron was freed.

It took the combined effort of emergency services and rescue crews to free him at approximately 9.40pm.

He suffered extensive lower leg injuries.

RACQ CareFlight Rescue airlifted Mr Cameron to the Clive Berghofer CareFlight Centre in Toowoomba, where he was transferred to a road ambulance and taken to Toowoomba Base Hospital.

He travelled in a stable condition.
