This role provides primary scene response, inter-facility transfers and search and rescue missions throughout Queensland and occasional international retrievals around the world.

The position is part-time, minimum 0.25 FTE commitment for the first 6 months of employment for external applicants.

Retrieval Consultants work with Flight Paramedics and Flight Nurses as clinical retrieval teams providing high-level care to all patients retrieved by LifeFlight Retrieval Medicine (LRM) from bases throughout Queensland.  Work performed includes patient assessments, appropriate investigations, formulation and implementation of management plans, affecting safe transports to definitive care facilities and completion of all required clinical documentation.

Retrieval tasks are conducted on a variety of aeromedical and road platforms throughout Qld. Retrieval Consultants are also expected to support local base operations, assist in Retrieval Registrar education and training and participate in clinical governance activities.

Retrieval Consultants must hold specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Agency (AHPRA) in Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, Intensive Care Medicine or General Practice.  FACRRM / RACGP must also hold qualifications in Emergency Medicine and Anaesthetics.

Retrieval Consultants must have, or be able to achieve, credentialing through the relevant Queensland Health Credentialing and Scope of Practice Committee with a Scope of Practice in Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine (PH&RM). Credentialing generally requires 6 months PHRM full-time equivalent experience in addition to ACEM / CICM / ANZCA / FACRRM / RACCGP specialist qualification.

  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience in the principles and practices of Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine.
  • An ability and commitment to work a proportion of flight shifts away from the Retrieval Consultant’s home base is highly desirable, particularly for candidates desiring to work at LRM bases in southeast Queensland.
  • Willingness to work an equitable mix of day, night and weekend retrieval shifts.
  • Demonstrated highly developed interpersonal, communication and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to training, clinical audit and quality improvement.


  • Lead retrieval teams to consistently provide excellent patient care.
  • Contribute to an equitable mix of shifts across assigned base roster.
  • It is desirable for the retrieval consultant to have the flexibility to work away from their home base if required.
  • Undertake all needed aviation and medical training and maintain clinical currency requirements as directed by the Director of Clinical Services and Governance.
  • Keep and submit an accurate clinical record for every retrieval task undertaken.

Education and Training

  • Provide supervision and feedback to retrieval registrars during base orientation, buddy shifts and at various times during the term
  • Provide input to registrar mid-term and end-of-term assessments
  • Contribute to weekly teaching and education programs.
  • Contribute to biannual training week activities.

Quality Improvement / Clinical Governance

  • Participate in developing of adverse event reports (AERs), observation and occurrence reports (OORs), high-interest event reports and case review reports in conjunction with LRM’s clinical governance team.
  • Actively participate in LRM’s clinical audit and case-based discussion programs.
