Patient Story -
Swimmer shares story after being pulled from surf
My name is Natalie Ward, I am 20 years old. In December 2005, I was surfing off the coast at Mudjimba. I’m not sure how it happened, but I became unconscious and fell from my surfboard.
I was pulled from the bottom of the ocean by a couple of surfers who saw my board floating at an odd angle and knew there was someone underneath attached to the leg rope.
They pulled me from the water and contacted emergency services.
Thankfully, Surf Lifesaving and the rescue helicopter came to my aid because every second it took for me to get to the hospital decreased my chances of recovering.
I was in an induced coma in hospital for three days.
Today, I am happy and completely healthy and I am so grateful to everyone who made that happen.
I don’t want to think about what it could have been like if the rescue helicopter wasn’t there to help me!
