Toddler in critical condition after near drowning

RACQ CareFlight Rescue's Sunshine Coast helicopter was tasked to the southern end of Bribie Island just after 1:45pm Sunday afternoon after reports of a toddler had been pulled from the water unconscious.

It's believed the young girl from Brisbane had been visiting the area with family.

An off duty ambulance officer noticed the girl in the water and rushed in to pull her out.

It's believed she may have been in the water for up to eight minutes.

The off duty officer started CPR and continued for 20 minutes until the young child showed signs of life.

Both the helicopter's medical team and QAS officers treated the girl for a time before being airlifted with her mother to the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in a critical condition.
