Robbie McEwen launches CareFlight Base to Base Cycle Challenge

Three time Tour de France Green Jersey winner Robbie McEwen officially launched the CareFlight Base to Base Cycle Challenge today at a breakfast inside the charity’s operational hangar.

Fifty high-profile guests including members from the Giant Charter Mason cycling team and past CareFlight patients gathered at CareFlight’s Gold Coast aircraft hangar to celebrate the launch of the fourth annual ride.

“I’ve had friends that have been airlifted by CareFlight, so it’s a cause close to my heart,” Ride Ambassador Robbie McEwen said.

The CareFlight Base to Base Cycle Challenge will be held on Sunday May 3 with a team of 70 cyclists riding an impressive 260 kilometres in a single day from the Gold Coast to CareFlight’s Toowoomba Hangar in the ride to save lives.

“Robbie has been a strong supporter of our service and we’re so privileged to have him return for a third year to tackle the gruelling trek,” Event Director Fiona MacAnally said.

“Each of the riders commit to raising a minimum of $1,200 for CareFlight. Riders in ‘Team Robbie’ will raise a minimum of $2,500 each, which is an exciting new initiative this year.”

Mr McEwen will hit the road with a number of well-known cyclists, former patients, corporate executives and CareFlight crew, travelling through towns and communities the CareFlight helicopter regularly flies to.

“We call this event ‘the ride to save lives’ because that’s really what it achieves,” Mrs MacAnally said.

“Each CareFlight rescue mission costs in excess of $12,500 so funds raised from this event alone can save the lives of many people in our community – we hope everyone gets behind these cyclists and donates to the cause,” she said.

Last years’ event raised $60,000 and organisers expect to top that with the biggest to-date goal of $100,000 in 2015.
