Critically injured man airlifted to hospital after head on crash

A man has been critically injured in a head on collision at Murwillumbah this morning, requiring the urgent airlift by an RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter.

The man, aged in his mid to late 20s, sustained suspected head and pelvic injuries in the crash, which happened near the intersection of Tumbulgum and Cane Roads.

The Gold Coast RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter was tasked on the emergency air-medical retrieval shortly before 7.30am, landing at the scene within 20 minutes.

RACQ CareFlight Rescue Aircrewman Ryan Purchase said the man was entrapped in his vehicle for a short period before emergency services could extricate him from the wreckage.

“The Critical Care Doctor and Flight Intensive Care Paramedic on-board CareFlight’s helicopter treated the man’s serious injuries, which also included a suspected fractured leg,” he said.

He was flown to the Gold Coast University Hospital for immediate specialist treatment in a critical condition.

One in ten of all RACQ CareFlight Rescue missions are to treat and airlift patients seriously injured in road accidents.
