A message from Brad Solomon - RACQ CareFlight Paramedic and Base to Base Cycle Challenge Co-organiser

We always speak about family at CareFlight and the importance we place on helping others in their time of need.

Recently on a cold, wet Monday 40 cyclists began a 250km journey from Toowoomba to the Gold Coast in the second annual Base to Base Cycle Challenge.

As a supporter of the Base to Base Cycle Challenge riders through the Everyday Hero campaign, you not only helped raise an incredible $80,000, but became part of the CareFlight Family.

For me the family spirit was never as evident as during that gruelling eight hour ride.

Along with cycling champion Robbie McEwen, Superbike legend Troy Bayliss and celebrities, there were a host of other cycling champions, amateur riders and past patients who I’m so proud to say we were able to help in their greatest time of need.

On that day I witnessed continual acts of kindness and generosity, be it pro cyclists hand delivering water up and down the peloton to the weary, to literally putting their arms around flagging riders to push them up the tough hills, so that they could also fulfil their personal dream of finishing the Base to Base Cycle Challenge.

But no day starts and ends with the participants.

Well known ride director Kerry Stubbs volunteered his invaluable experience to be Ride Director for the event.

His wife Kim also worked behind the scenes to capture images of the day.

Small businesses in Toowoomba and on the Gold Coast also kept us going, be it Alastair from ‘11th Hour Coffee’ or Justin from ‘Bikeline’ in Toowoomba, it was all part of a team effort, a family affair.

Thanks also to our CareFlight staff, especially the incredible Challenge Organiser Fiona MacAnally, RACQ and Queensland Police who made sure we were safe.

There were also a host of other support crew who worked tirelessly behind the scenes.

They are quiet achievers and our everyday heroes.

Thank you all again for your efforts on behalf of our patients, you are helping to save lives.

And watch this space, we are already planning next year!
