McDonald family airlifted in joint effort by SCHR and CareFlight Group Queensland
What began as a fun-filled birthday celebration for five year old Mia McDonald, turned into a fight for life for all four members of the McDonald family in August last year.
Parents Scott and Shannon were driving home to their Boyland property in the Gold Coast Hinterland with daughters Mia and Michala when their car collided with an oncoming vehicle.
Road ambulance crews immediately responded to the crash before the RACQ CareFlight Rescue and Sunshine Coast Helicopter Rescue Service helicopters were tasked to the scene.
Critical Care Flight doctors and Intensive Care Paramedics from both services worked collaboratively to treat the family and their various multi-trauma injuries before flying all four to Brisbane for specialist treatment.
Mia and Shannon were flown by RACQ CareFlight Rescue and Michala and Scott by the Sunshine Coast Rescue Helicopter.
Today, almost one year on from the devastating crash, the family was reunited with their helicopter heroes to celebrate the two services uniting as one.
The ever-grateful McDonald family arrived to Tuesday’s milestone celebration in true CareFlight style – in the back of the helicopter that saved their lives.
