Monday 16 December 2013

The Sunshine Coast-based RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter was tasked to a beacon search in the vicinity of Archerfield Airport this evening.

The search led the helicopter crew to a refuse tip near Greenbank.

A distress beacon had been improperly disposed of and accidently activated at the tip, prompting the air search.

RACQ CareFlight Rescue Aircrewman Dan King has urged people to be considerate when disposing of beacon’s to avoid wasting emergency services resources.

“People should take their old beacons to somewhere like Battery World where they can safely de-activate and dispose of the beacon, he said.

“We urge people to be mindful in future when they dispose of old beacons to avoid false alarms like this.

The crew has now returned to base.
