Injured surf-ski rider winched to safety

The RACQ CareFlight helicopter has winched a badly injured surf-ski rider from the mouth of Tallebudgera Creek.

Aircremwan Ryan Purchase said early reports suggest the 65 year old man came off his ski onto rocks.

"Ambulance crews were initially tasked to what was being described as a near drowning," said Ryan.

"The man suffered chest and abdominal injuries and had a substantial amount of water in his lungs.

"When his condition started to deteriorate the decision was made to task the chopper so he could be winched out quickly."

CareFlight's Doctor and Paramedic were already on the ground helping QAS treat the patient.

Just after 10am, the patient was stretcher winched into the CareFlight helicopter and transported to the Gold Coast Hospital.

He was in a serious but stable condition during the flight.
